Please note that this wiki is an unofficial source of information. There are currently no official translations of the curricula for any programs and anyone is able to edit this wiki. The aim is to provide accurate information, but errors and discrepancies may still occur. If in doubt, check in with fsinf or the dean of studies and don’t rely on this wiki.
General
This page covers the curriculum for Media and Human-Centered Computing as of October 1st 2019. If you started studying this program before October 2019, some of the information below may not apply to you.
Additional information on specific courses, substitutions and other rulings can be found on https://peter-purgathofer.squarespace.com/mmh, which is updated by the curriculum coordinator.
For information on how to start studying Media and Human-Centered Computing at TU Wien, refer to the Admissions Office.
To complete this study program, at least 120 ECTS worth of courses need to be completed. This includes:
- mandatory courses in the foundation track (33 ECTS)
- elective courses in other tracks (at least 48 ECTS)
- elective courses and transferable skills (at least 9 ECTS)
- the diploma thesis, thesis defense and the diploma seminar (30 ECTS)
Courses (Lehrveranstaltungen) are grouped into modules covering specific areas. In general, courses only contribute to the completion of the study program if the corresponding module has been completed. Some modules may contain only a single course to be completed, while others require the completion of some or all courses within the module.
Each module is assigned to one or several tracks (Prüfungsfächer) that focus on different areas of Human-Centered Computing. Most tracks have one mandatory module that needs to be completed in order to be able to use other modules from that track for study progress.
For more information on the availability of specific courses or to sign up, refer to TISS.
Foundation
All courses in all modules in the Foundation track are mandatory. It is recommended, but not necessary to do Foundation courses before starting on courses from other tracks.
Elective Tracks
The official curriculum lists all tracks and their modules on page 6 and 7.
To complete the study program, at least 48 ECTS worth of modules listed here have to be completed. It's possible to choose modules from any number of tracks, however, each track has a mandatory module (those are marked with asterisks in the official curriculum document). The mandatory module is needed to use other modules from the track, but can be skipped if only modules from other tracks are selected.
Interactive Media
See the respective VoWi pages for information on offered courses. To use modules from this track, the module Digital Media - Interaction and Environment has to be completed, too.
Interaction Design
See the respective VoWi pages for information on offered courses. To use modules from this track, the module Design Thinking & Design for All has to be completed, too.
Vision & Visualisation
See the respective VoWi pages for information on offered courses. To use modules from this track, the module Image Processing & Visualization has to be completed, too.
Note that the course Computer Vision is currently listed for both the mandatory module as well as the elective module Computer Vision. This is a known error in the curriculum. While no official workaround exists, it is recommended to look for a suitable replacement course (6 ECTS, similar topics) and talk to Peter Purgathofer and the vice dean of studies, Stefan Woltran, to get written confirmation for this curriculum adjustment.
Critical Reflection
See the respective VoWi pages for information on offered courses. To use modules from this track, the module Critical Theory of Media and Informatics has to be completed, too.
Emergent Technologies
See the respective VoWi pages for information on offered courses. To use modules from this track, the module Media Technologies, Emergent and Open Technologies has to be completed, too.
Transferable Skills
4,5 ECTS have to be courses categorized as Transferable Skills. These courses are not organised in modules, although there are some requirements that have to be met.
Some transferable skills are listed in TISS, but it's often possible to use other courses for this category, too. In general, everything focusing on "soft skills", i.e. communication, cooperation, presentation, etc. can be used as a transferable skill.
If in doubt, contact the dean/vice dean of studies and get a written confirmation for being able to use a specific course as a transferable skill.
Freely Elective Courses
The curriculum leaves 4,5 ECTS for courses that can be chosen nearly completely freely. There is also a list of free electives in TISS, however, you may use almost any course for this category. The only formal requirements are:
- it's offered by an established university (any university, not necessarily TU Wien)
- you'll get a certificate with a grade and a number of ECTS points
- it's not equivalent to a course you have to do as a part of the program.
In practice, this means you can do almost anything you want to earn these credits, e.g. language courses, art focused courses, introductory (or advanced) lectures from other subjects,... To get some inspiration, also see the courses offered by Uni Wien
